Poul Henningsen is famous for creating lamps where the shades is used to avoid glare but at the same time contributed to optimise the amount of functional light in a room and according to PH this could be achieved by working with different type of materials.
Come and hear the fascinating stories told by Ulla Riemer about Poul Henningsen's lighting principles, his life, work and designs.
The art of taming the light...
Danish architect Poul Henningsen, known by his initials, ”PH” was obsessed with light. He is the legendary creator of the lighting series carrying his name. He can be said to be the world’s first lighting architect. Poul Henningsen devoted his entire career to investigating the importance of light for our well-being. He worked on the theory that the observer should not be subjected to direct glare from the electric light source. Henningsen used a series of layered shades to both spread the light and conceal the light bulb, thus creating a softer more diffused lighting.
In the 1920s Poul Henningsen undertook the challenge of inventing absolutely glare-free light. The objective was to create good light for a good life and get the best possible light from an electrical light bulb and still creating a warm ambiance – closer to the light temperature given by lit candles or petrol lamps. Poul Henningsen created the so-called 3-shade system were the shades were used to avoid glare but at the same time contributed to optimise the amount of functional light in a room and according to PH this could be achieved by working with different type of materials
PH would have turned 120 this year and ikonhouse is celebrating him with an evening dedicated to his work and designs.
Poul Henningsen, the founder of the Louis Poulsen lighting principles:
* NO glare. Make pleasant, human light.
* Direct the light to where you need it, - don’t light up the entire room! Make little ”islands” of light
* Create the right atmosphere with timeless fixtures
