Charles and Ray Eames are ranked among the most important designers of the 20th century. Best known for their groundbreaking work in architecture, furniture design, industrial design and manufacturing, the photographic arts, graphic design and exhibition design, perhaps their greatest contribution lies in their unique approach to problem solving. It was their commitment to being good hosts to all who encountered their work that drove them to "push" materials to their limits while at the same time respecting those limitations that created elegant, classic, deeply functional design solutions.
In 1953, Willi Fehlbaum, the founder of Vitra, discovered chairs designed by Charles and Ray Eames on a trip to the USA and decided to become a furniture manufacturer. He met the designer couple in person a short time later and developed a lasting friendship.
Originals only at ikonhouse. Invest in an original, for it will always retain its worth. An imitation will never be anything but a copy, a stolen idea. Appreciate the differences – not just the quality and more obvious variances but also the sensory and emotional appeal of the authentic product. An original is a lifelong companion and may well outlive you to be gratefully received by the next generation. But that’s a story for the future.
Please join us at ikonhouse for a Design Talk with Eames Demetrios, Director of the Eames Office and grandson of Charles & Ray Eames, where he will discuss the value of the Original.

GUEST SPEAKER
Eames Demetrios
Eames Demetrios wears many different hats, but he is best known in the design world for his work as director of the Eames Office spearheading the successful re-discovery of the Charles and Ray Eames design heritage by new generations. The mission of the Eames Office is communicating, preserving and extending the work of Charles and Ray Eames.
Among his many achievements in this capacity is the multimedia component of the Library of Congress/Vitra Design Museum Eames exhibition, the CD-ROM Powers of Ten, the re-introduction of many Eames furniture pieces, and the release and video restoration of the Eames films. In addition, he works closely with Vitra and Herman Miller to be sure the Eames furniture is always made authentically and was instrumental in the founding of the Eames Foundation (to preserve the Eames House). He has also written a book about Charles and Ray Eames - An Eames Primer, intended as a thematic biography of their life, work, process and philosophy, now widely used by schools. Moreover, he is the chairman of the board of the Eames Foundation which takes care of the Eames House. Demetrios and his wife live in Los Angeles and have two sons.
